About AAPC Northwest Region
AAPC Northwest Region includes members of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) in the United States (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) and Canada (Alberta and British Columbia).
AAPC represents and
sets professional standards for over 3,000 Pastoral Counselors and 100
pastoral counseling centers in North America and around the world.
AAPC was founded in 1963 as an organization which
- certifies Pastoral Counselors
- accredits pastoral counseling centers
- approves training programs
Our members have
specialized training which enables them to respect the spiritual
commitments and religious traditions of those who seek their
assistance. The role of the Pastoral Counselor is to help the client
use their own spiritual commitments and traditions for healing and
growth, rather than imposing beliefs on the client. While most of our
members are part of the Christian tradition, some are members of other
faith traditions such as Jewish and Buddhist.
Persons become a member of AAPC through a rigorous process of consultation and a review of academic and clinical education. AAPC’s Code of Ethics holds our members to a standard of practice that results in a competent professional ministry. The AAPC Mission Statement is to promote the profession and the practice of Pastoral Counseling and to train future generations of the profession.
AAPC, at the Regional and Association level,
- provides its members with vital continuing education opportunities (see Continuing Education page for Fall Conference information)
- encourages networks of members for professional support and enrichment (see the Internet-based discussion group for Pastoral Counselors)
- facilitates growth and innovation in the ministry of pastoral counseling
- provides both specialized in-service training and supervision in pastoral counseling
